Getting to San Francisco
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is one of the best-connected US airports for India. Air India operates a direct Delhi–SFO service. Alternatively, connections via Dubai (Emirates), Abu Dhabi (Etihad), London (British Airways/Virgin Atlantic) or Doha (Qatar Airways) typically add just two to three hours of total travel time. Flight time on the direct route is approximately 15 hours.
Getting Around the City
San Francisco is compact and highly walkable in the central districts. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) connects SFO to downtown in 30 minutes. Within the city, the cable cars and historic streetcars on Market Street are genuinely practical, not just a tourist novelty. Uber and Lyft are widely used. Hiring a car in the city itself is not recommended due to the notoriously steep hills, limited parking and peak-hour traffic.
SF for Indian Travellers
The San Francisco Bay Area has one of the largest Indian communities in the United States, concentrated in Fremont, Sunnyvale and South Bay. Indian grocery stores, Udupi restaurants and regional South Indian cuisine are widely available. Closer to central SF, Yelp and Google Maps surface strong vegetarian and Jain-friendly options in the Mission District and around Union Square.
Day Trips Worth Planning
Napa Valley wine country is 90 minutes by car – ideal for a full day. Muir Woods National Monument, with its ancient coastal redwoods, is 45 minutes north. Santa Cruz is two hours south and worth combining with a night in Carmel. Yosemite National Park is a four-hour drive but better treated as an overnight trip than a day excursion. Yes – San Francisco is one of the most walkable and transit-friendly US cities. The cable cars, BART metro, Muni buses, and Caltrain all work reliably. For the city itself, a car is unnecessary and parking is expensive. For day trips to Napa, Yosemite, or Silicon Valley, a rental car or guided tour is recommended.
San Francisco's climate is famously mild but cool. Summers average 17–20°C with morning fog. Always pack a light jacket or layering pieces regardless of the month. The Mark Twain quote often attributed to the city – "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco" – captures the experience for visitors expecting California sunshine.
Technically yes, but it is a very long day. The drive is 3.5–4 hours each way. We recommend it as an overnight or two-night trip to give you time to properly experience Yosemite Valley, hike, and not rush the drive. September and October are the best months – the summer fog has lifted, temperatures are at their warmest (20–22°C), and the city is less crowded than peak summer. Spring (April–May) is also pleasant. Avoid June and July if you are hoping for beach-weather sunshine; the famous Bay fog is at its most persistent then.
